The Writing University conducts a series of interviews with writers while they are in Iowa City participating in the various University of Iowa writing programs. We sit down with authors to ask about their work, their process and their descriptions of home.

Today, we are speaking with Damon Gray, a first-year student in screenwriting arts. Damon Gray is a writer and a visionary raised in Waterloo, Iowa. Proud member of UIowa’s notable club, Hubbard Scholars, he strives to uplift and represent his community not only on campus but also within his scripts. Damon recently created his first short film with partner Caronte Grayer titled ‘I SURRENDER,' following the strange day of a young boy as his surroundings test him. Additionally, Damon has utilized his photography and videography skills to assist various businesses and organizations such as The Cedar Valley Fashion, Art and Culture Expo, or CHOMP Delivery.

1. Can you tell us a little bit about what brought you to the University of Iowa?
I love how the university's campus is integrated into downtown. When I noticed this during my orientation, it made everything so much more lively. The central focus on writing and creativity drew me to the University of Iowa. I heard so much about profound authors, screenwriters, and poets who practiced and then mastered their craft in Iowa City. If any place is best to pursue my dream as a screenwriter, it’s here!

2. What is the inspiration for your work right now?
My inspiration is always sourced from my community. The media I consumed during my childhood drove me to bring more representation to the big screen. I wish to leave an impact on all aspiring black creatives! This past year, my motivation has grown tremendously due to the passion of not only my current peers but my friends back home as well.  I witness so much creativity and devotion towards the arts that it only pushes me more.

3. Do you have a daily writing routine?
Usually, I write based on heightened feelings and emotions. Whenever I feel an intense amount of inspiration or influence, I create one of the many stories that are stored in the back of my brain. Although this feels great, I’ve begun to shift more into outlining my scripts for a week or two, then making it flow on the page!

4. What are you reading right now? Are you reading for research or pleasure?
I just began John Truby’s “Anatomy of Genres”. One of my professors recommended this book to me for its helpful advice on how to create unique sequences in scripts based on the genre of the tale.

5. Tell us about where you are from - what are some favorite details you would like to share about your home?
I am from Waterloo, Iowa, a little over an hour out from Iowa City. One of the things I love about my hometown is the immense amount of talent and devotion that the youth possess. I hope the creative scene does nothing but else but grow.
