IOWA CITY, IOWA — The International Writing Program (IWP) invites U.S. students ages 15-22 from Iowa and across the country to apply to their virtual summer programs, hosted with major support from the University of Iowa, the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the U.S. Department of State, the U.S. Embassy in Islamabad, and the Doris Duke Foundation for Islamic Art.

IWP's Between the Lines two-week creative writing and cultural exchange virtual summer camp through the University of Iowa offers two sessions in 2021 and is open to students ages 15-18 from the U.S. and 23 countries. The programs are 100% free for 2021.

 

Between the Lines: Identity and Belonging

This session is for U.S. students, ages 15-18.

10 spots will be reserved for Muslim students. Students who are first- or second-generation immigrants, or from refugee communities, low-income households, or other marginalized positions are particularly encouraged to apply.

This program is supported by the Doris Duke Foundation for Islamic Art’s Building Bridges Program.
 

Between the Lines: Peace and the Writing Experience

This program, for U.S. and international students ages 15-18 from 23 countries in 2021 (Afghanistan, Algeria, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Bangladesh, China, Egypt, Georgia, India, Iraq, Jordan, Kazakhstan, Lebanon, Mongolia, Morocco, Pakistan, Poland, the Russian Federation, Sri Lanka, Tajikistan, Tunisia, Ukraine, and United Arab Emirates (UAE)), is supported by the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the U.S. State Department. There is usually a tuition fee for U.S. students but for 2021, it is 100% free.

The IWP Summer Institute is an immersive two-week creative writing and cultural exchange program hosted virtually by the University of Iowa for students ages 1822 from the U.S., Pakistan, and India. The Summer Institute is 100% free and 100% virtual in 2021. Students from all disciplines—the arts, humanities, sciences, and everything in between—are welcome to apply. The program is funded by the U.S. Embassy in Islamabad.

Since 1967, the International Writing Program (IWP) at the University of Iowa has hosted more than 1,500 writers from more than 150 countries, connecting well-established writers from around the globe, introducing American writers to other cultures through reading tours, publishing books and journals, pursuing cultural diplomacy, and organizing tours, conferences, and other literary and intercultural events around the world.
