Between the Lines and The IWP Summer Institute
Between the Lines
Since 2008, Between the Lines (BTL) has hosted young writers at the University of Iowa for a cultural exchange program that focuses on the art and craft of creative writing. Participants, aged 15-18, come together in Iowa City for an intensive two-week session. During the session, they live in campus dorms and spend their days in creative writing workshops and global literature seminars designed to broaden their literary horizons and deepen their empathy for and understanding of one another’s identities and stories.

Two Between the Lines Sessions:
Between the Lines: Identity & Belonging
This session, for U.S. students ages 15-18, is •• free •• for all accepted applicants.
10 spots will be reserved for Muslim students.
Students who are first- or second-generation immigrants, or from refugee communities, low-income households, or other marginalized positions are particularly encouraged to apply.
Between the Lines: Peace & the Writing Experience
In 2020, this session is for students ages 15-18
from the U.S. and the following countries: Algeria, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Bangladesh, Belarus, Egypt, Georgia, India, Iraq, Jordan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Lebanon, Morocco, Nepal, Oman, Pakistan, Poland, Qatar, the Russian Federation, Sri Lanka, Tajikistan, Tunisia, Turkey, Turkmenistan, Ukraine, United Arab Emirates (UAE), and Uzbekistan.
This session is free for non-U.S. students. Need-based scholarships are available for U.S. students.

Summer Institute Application Deadline Extended!
The Summer Institute is an immersive two-week creative writing and cultural exchange program held in Iowa City, Iowa, U.S., a UNESCO City of Literature, for participants age 18-22 from Pakistan, India, and the U.S. Students from all disciplines – the arts, humanities, sciences, and everything in between – are welcome to apply! This program is free for accepted applicants, and will focus on creative writing and the power of narrative. Attendees take part in master classes in the craft of writing, in collaborative workshops focused on their creative work, and in activities designed to forge new lines of understanding and shared purpose among its community of writers. The Summer Institute is an opportunity to see writing as a form of action – a personally-empowering skill that can be employed for social change.
