The Winter 2016/2017 issue of The Iowa Review has arrived, and as the cover may suggest, its pages invite readers to cozy up—cuddle up—and fully immerse themselves in the words, worlds, and narratives that lie within. In the depths of winter, the poems, stories, and essays inside this issue promise to transport to places faraway, provide escape from the season, and offer solace through the experiences of others.

This poignant collection features work by Annie DeWitt, Cynthia Cruz, Robin Hemley, Barry Lopez, and many more. Also included in the issue is the work of the 2016 Iowa Review Award winners and runners-up. In the poetry contest, judged by Brenda Shaughnessy, the winner was sam sax and the runner-up Justin Phillip Reed; in fiction, judged by Kelly Link, the winner was Amy Widmoyer Hanson and the runners-up were Maria Anderson and Anjali Sachdeva; and in nonfiction, judged by Eula Biss, the winner was Evan James and the runner-up was Sarah Heston.

The Iowa Review is a literary magazine based in the Department of English, College of Liberal Arts & Sciences, University of Iowa. Founded in 1970, it publishes three print issues per year featuring the best in poetry, fiction, and literary nonfiction. Work from its pages is consistently selected to appear in such anthologies as Best American Essays, Best American Short Stories, Best American Poetry, The Pushcart Prize: Best of the Small Presses, and The PEN/O. Henry Prize Stories.
