This March, South African Writer and IWP '14 resident Sabata-mpho Mokae returns to Iowa this spring with great anticipation. His visit will include teaching a workshop for the Iowa Writers' House March 25th and 26th: FROM MEMORY TO IMAGINATION will teach writers how one can draw from experience while creating new stories and developing their own VOICE. Included in this workshop is ‘Writing from Third World Perspective’. In this segment, we will explore how writers in the so-called Third World find inspiration and that world to create the new world without totally alienating themselves from their environs.

This workshop was created for both fiction and non-fiction writers. It is perfect for beginning writers as well as those who are looking to advance their skill sets.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR

Sabata-mpho Mokae is the author ofThe Story of Sol T Plaatje (biography), Dikeledi [Tears] a youth novella and Escaping Trauma, and a poetry collection. Mokae won the M-Net Literary Award for Best Novel in Setswana for his first novel, Ga Ke Modisa [I’m Not My Brother’s Keeper] as well as the the South African Literary Award (literary journalism category) in 2011.
